I've emailed everyone the 2008 preliminary roster (I can't believe I've written 2008 on something and that I'm thinking that far ahead - eeek), which includes our "Volunteer in the Spotlight" column.
We've interviewed and written almost a year's worth of columns this year and I think it's time to review the concept. Originally this column came from complaints at last year's NAC that volunteers were given enough exposure or public thanks. But can we do it better or is it even working?
I'd love your comments on things like:
Format
Style
Length
Need
Target audience
(and anything else you can think of)

I think they are working - we always get comments at group meetings about inCite content and the fact that Top End Group activities feature more in inCite than used to.
We probably need to have a conversation about who we should be interviewing though - my first interview was with the Deputy Convenor of the local group whilst everyone else appeared to have gone for their Convenor (I wondered why the Convenor got snitchy with me for a little while then :)!).
Robyn's since clarified that it can be any volunteer, so look out for the November interview!
Personally, I enjoy reading them. I interviewed the treasurer of our state group, but had tried to get a member from Toowoomba since I thought it would be interesting to hear about how she coped with the distance. I like the idea of variety - not everyone can relate to being the convenor. And I like the questions, they usually get interesting answers.
Would it be useful to have a standard footer to the column stating how much we value volunteers, and briefly outlining how people can get involved?
I like the columns. I expect like everything they will have a shelf life - we wont be still looking at then same old volunteers in 5 years time. I think committing to doing them again in 2008 is a good idea. Maybe we need to talk to each other about who we are thinking of interviewing - so we get a good cross section. This year I did the ALIA Vic Convenor who is also a new grad and another young lady from a regional area who is also very involved in ew grads. I think for balance I am going to try someone from Schools for my 1st one next year.
I agree that the interviews are working, and certainly think we should continue. I think we need to make sure we get a variety of volunteers -- it worked this year by accident, but it might not be the case next time. Young volunteers, older ones, urban, rural, various sectors -- we need to try to cover all the possibilities. I don't especially like the "what do you do for a crust" question, though I do like finding out what people do for a living -- guess that wording just doesn't appeal. Small point, though. Maybe we should try a little brainstorm to ensure we get a good cross-section in 2008.
