Once you start blogging, you can't stop!
One of the most valuable things I do to keep my 'finger on the pulse' never goes on my timesheet - too much wine and laughter involved! Every 6-8 weeks I have a lazy weekend lunch with a bunch of women in Brisbane. They're all current or ex directors, presidents or state convenors of ALIA. I find out things that I'd otherwise never know about (upcoming events, industry trends etc) because these women come from all sectors of the industry. It's a way of keeping ex board members engaged too since there really is no 'life after the board'. They have a wealth of experience and are generous with advice etc.
So, if you're lucky enough to get on well with even one or two ALIAphiles in your town, think about starting up a regular social get-together. These things tend to take on a life of their own and will grow over time.

I think your comment about ex-board members is important. There really is no life after the Board and I think many of the people in this position go from being very full on alia supporters to not really having a venue to support us. We need to find ways to continue to use their expertise, knowledge and motivation.
I think this is a great idea Claudia! I keep in touch with the former group convenors and our sole former director but it's always 'one on one' - I haven't thought of doing it as a group thing. I will endeavour to make a lunch date before the end of the year!
Like Jane, I'm in touch with former convenors as we're a small community but we don't regularly meet as a group. Rarely ever see our one ex-board member...so organising a social lunch may be the way to go. Claudia, we'll talk more over dinner on Thursday night...thanks for the idea!
