LIS School visits

Hi all,

Your advice is wanted. When you visit LIS schools:
  • What are the top 3 benefits of ALIA student membership that you emphasise?
  • Have any of you done a double act with an ALIA group member and if so, how did it go?
  • What goes down well with students?
  • What would you never do again?
  • How long do you talk?
Thanks, Sally

Sorry to be so slow to respond, Sally -- your email came at a bad time, and then I simply forgot to get back to you. My apologies! Hard to say the 3 top benefits, but networking, job seeking help and PD usually appeal. I've never gone with a group member, but I think it's a great idea, esp if you can find someone really, really enthusiastic. Some sessions go better than others, some students are more interested than others, but generally the sessions go well. Helps if the lecturer who's in charge is an enthusiastic member of course. Can't think of anything I'd never do. There is a good generic PPT we put together last year -- do you have it? If not, let me know and I'll email it to you. Just looked at it again now, and it needs some updating, but when I used it last year it worked well -- I just like to have something like that to focus me so I don't ramble on. Students also like handouts -- I gave them ones on finding jobs and they loved it! Any other ALIA stuff goes down well, too -- bookmarks, back copies of inCite, etc. Robyn, Dianne and I are working a nice but generic "join ALIA" flyer for students --sadly not ready yet, but will be perfect for such visits I hope. Hope this helps -- happy to talk further if you want to pick up the phone. You know me, I can talk under wet cement! Will be interested to hear what the others do --daresay there are some much more creative ideas out there. Good luck with it -- Cheers, Niki

I haven't as much experience as the other LLOs strangely, but having a new grad coordinator there can be a real help. I think though with volunteers, only invite them if you think they will support ALIA (that is say you should join) and that they're enthusiastic and passionate - otherwise you're better off on your own.

Students love handouts for some reason and the offer of a free month of membership can really help too (but put a time limit on it - happy to chat further about this).

The 3 best things, the access to the job listings, access to mentors and senior members of the profession through volunteering and the elists and groups and discounted training.

Hi Sally,

Like you, I haven't actually done a visit to the LIS schools here in Adelaide - they had already been done before I joined the ranks as LLO in August 2007.

My plan is to visit the TAFE campus later this month, hopefully with the assistance of Melaina, one of the convenors of the NGG group here in Adelaide. She is very enthusiatic and positive about her ALIA involvement while she was a student and credits it with helping her to win a job in what is traditionally a tight Adelaide employment market.

I'l take some inCite issues and other freebies along with me and if possible, use a power point on the benefits of ALIA to show them. I'm thinking about some wine and cheese if that is allowed but also use the opportunity to promote a NGG event scheduled for July where Melaina will push membership of the group to both TAFE and UniSA students
